Povidone iodine is a loose complex formed by combining elemental iodine and polymer carrier, Povidone acts as carrier and solubilization aid. It is yellowish-brown to brownish-red amorphous powder at room temperature. Slightly smelly, soluble in water, aqueous solution is acidic, insoluble in ether. Povidone iodine solution has no shortcomings of iodine tincture, light coloring, easy elution, little stimulation to mucosa, no need for alcohol deiodination, no corrosion, and low toxicity.
