What is styrene?
Styrene (Styrene or Styrene Monomer, C8H8) is an organic compound formed by replacing one hydrogen atom of ethylene with benzene. It is a colorless and transparent oily liquid with a density of 0.909g/mL. It is insoluble in water and soluble in organic solvents such as ethanol and ether. It is prone to polymerization and oxidation when exposed to air.
Uses of styrene
1. The main use of styrene is as a monomer to form rubber and plastics, used to produce styrene-butadiene rubber, polystyrene, foamed polystyrene; it is also used to copolymerize with other monomers to produce a variety of projects with different uses plastic.
2. Styrene is used for organic composition and resin composition, used to make copper plating brightener, and has the effect of leveling and brightening.
3. Styrene is used as a hard monomer for making styrene-acrylic emulsions and solvent-based pressure-sensitive adhesives, and can also be used as a cross-linking monomer for unsaturated polyester resins. It is used to make polystyrene, foamed polystyrene and styrene-butadiene rubber; it can be copolymerized with acrylonitrile and butadiene to make ABS resin; it can be copolymerized with butadiene and isoprene to make SBS and SIS thermoplastic elastomer; Copolymerization of vinyl ester and acrylate to make emulsion-type adhesives and coatings.
4. Styrene is used to form styrene-butadiene rubber and polystyrene resin, polyester glass fiber reinforced plastic and paint, to form dye intermediate anthraquinone, pesticide emulsifier, medicine, mineral processing agent styrene phosphonic acid, etc.
5. Styrene is used to make polystyrene, form rubber, ion exchange resin, etc.
Packaging and Shipping Requirements for Styrene
1. Because styrene is easy to react with air, liquid styrene is generally packaged tightly in steel drums, glass bottles, and plastic bottles, and the outer packaging is made of ordinary wooden boxes or fiberboard boxes.
2. The flash point of styrene is 31 degrees Celsius, so during transportation in summer, avoid the high temperature period at noon, and keep away from heat sources and high temperature areas during transportation.
3. Styrene is easy to react with oxides, acidic substances and other chemicals. It should be transported by special vehicle during transportation to avoid mixing with oxides and acidic substances.
4. For transport vehicles, when transporting styrene, fire-fighting equipment and some emergency leakage plugging equipment should be prepared on the vehicle. If you use tank trucks and tankers, you must have grounding anti-static settings. In addition, the exhaust pipe of the vehicle must also have a flame arrester.
5. Due to the high danger of styrene, when transporting styrene, it is necessary to follow the prescribed route and avoid passing through densely populated places. Avoid sudden stop and sudden braking when the vehicle is driving, so as to avoid collision and damage to the package.
