Triethanolamine is widely used as a pH balancer in various detergents and beauty care products (including skin washes, eye gels, moisturizers, shampoos, etc.).

Another use of triethanolamine is as a complexing reagent for aluminum ions in solution. This reaction is usually used to "mask" a particular ion in solution (from its titration).

Triethanolamine is also used as an organic additive (0.1% by total mass) in the cement clinker grinding process. Triethanolamine can effectively aid grinding by preventing caking and sticking to the grinding surface, increasing cement yield and quality, and reducing energy consumption. [2] But the extent to which heavy metals and radioisotopes in triethanolamine complexed cement matrices can increase their solubility remains an open question.

The inorganic acid of triethanolamine can be used in the preparation of corrosion inhibitors in the metal processing industry to protect the metal surface and prevent oxidation.

Triethanolamine is included in the Chemical Weapons Convention because of its use in the manufacture of nitrogen mustard gas.
